#3 The Safe Place We ALL Need!
This morning is still and quiet. The kind of morning that invites reflection. I’m up early, working on a few things for the families I support, with the echo of last night’s storm still fresh in my mind. The thunder rolled in hard, and instantly, I was taken back to my childhood.
I remembered our screened-in porch, the sound of rain tapping the roof, and the comfort of curling up with a book while the storm passed. That small corner of the world made everything feel okay, even when the world outside felt unpredictable. It was my safe place.
I’d give anything to have that spot back.
It makes me wonder, do you have a place like that now? A space where you retreat when life feels too heavy, when the storms rolling through your life seem bigger than you can manage? When every decision feels like it carries the weight of the world, especially knowing that your choices affect those you love the most?
There’s no guidebook for this journey; especially for those of us navigating life as a special needs family. No glowing path appears to show us the “right” direction. Each child, each diagnosis, each situation is so deeply unique that even the most well-meaning advice can fall short.
And so, we often find ourselves standing alone in the storm. Bracing ourselves, doing our best, hoping and praying that when the skies clear, our children will be okay. That maybe—just maybe—they’ll be a little better for the choices we had to make under pressure, in the dark, with only love as our compass.
Because here’s the truth: every storm runs out of rain. The thunder will quiet. The skies will lighten. And in those moments after the storm, there’s hope. We find strength in knowing we did our best, even when the path wasn’t clear. And maybe, like that old screened-in porch, we’ll find comfort again; in new spaces, in small victories, and in the resilience that lives in both us and our children.
Thanks for being here!
